Steve Herrell started Steve's in the early 1970s, producing small batches of ice cream lusciously flavored with high-end mix-ins. Then he opened Herrell's, which one of us grew up eating in the sleepy west of the woody east. Now another person, named neither Steve nor Herrell, but who worked at the original Steve's, has opened Steve's Ice Cream in Manhattan, purportedly as a throwback to what Steve Herrell has been doing for four decades. Confused? Us too, so it helped that our friends are big fans.

We stopped in one night, grabbing a mint cacao chip and strawberry ricotta to go. Bites didn't take us back to the scoops of our childhood, but they did take us to a happy place.
