Dogmatic



If you're going to open a glorified hot dog stand and give it a name like "Dogmatic Gourmet Sausage System," you better be ready to deliver the goods. Fortunately, Dogmatic does, serving some of the most original dogs in the city, with all of today's restaurant musts --- grass-fed beef, house-made sodas, and locally grown vegetables. Their emphasis on the purity of their products encompasses the design of the restaurant as well: it contains one giant butcher block table with nifty little pull-out stools hiding underneath.


But the real secret weapon is the "sausage system," which is a catchy way of saying that the dogs are served inside hollowed-out baguettes that are toasted on the inside by heated spikes. The meat and sauce is then slipped inside the baguette, leaving you with a goody-filled roll. (You can see how it works here.) We had the lamb sausage with truffle gruyere and the vegetarian option, a baguette containing asparagus that we paired with the sun-dried tomato feta sauce. We also tried two of the house sodas, lemon-lime and grape. The former was peppy and delicious, but the latter tasted too much like bubble gum for us to get much of it down. Our sausage and asparagus, however, were both quite good and nicely complemented by the recommended sauces. We would complain that they're not filling enough, but, really, we'll just order two next time.

Yup, it sure was --- just not enough spears. Maybe that will change when asparagus comes more fully into season . . .
