Trini Delite
Liberty Avenue, in Ozone Park, Queens, has dozens of roti shops --- restaurants specializing in the curries, breads, and snacks of the Caribbean countries once known as the West Indies. We picked Trini Delite based on crowds alone; we figured that a long line couldn't steer us wrong.
And we were right. We sampled baby shrimp in green curry with masala along with pilau rice with beans, scooping it all in with torn off pieces of roti. Somehow, though, our huge pile of this unleavened bread never seemed to get any smaller.
For a sweet finale, we tried a sugar cake. Whereas roti has its own etymology, this dessert is exactly what it sounds like: sugar mixed with water and coconut, then baked to concrete consistency. We managed a single bite; we prized our front teeth too much to try for another. Next time, we'll stick with Bounty bars, especially if the waitstaff throws in one or two reggae remixes of Casey Kasem's greatest hits, lovingly and loudly played throughout lunch.
