Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries) at MoMI

The newly re-opened Museum of the Moving Image decided to give Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries) its New York premiere, in part to honor Indian cinema and in part to honor this stunning movie.

Director Kiran Rao captures four residents of contemporary Mumbai, including her husband, Aamir Khan (above). It's not a love story --- it's a loves story. Each character feels love, and each character suffers as a result. Gritty shots and an unabashed exploration of class prevent the movie from slipping into sentimentalism or romance; riveting cinematography helps too. It opens tomorrow in New York and Los Angeles. Go see it.
