Fort Wadsworth

A key cog in the once-impregnable New York harbor defense system, Fort Wadsworth now sits empty in the shadow of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge on Staten Island, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. In the winter, the gothic fortifications stand in starker relief, their decay a sign of the disappearance of a world in which threats came slowly and obviously across the horizon.
