48th and 3rd Chessboard

East 48th Street Chess Board

At the corner of 48th and 3rd, great chess matches from the past get replayed on a a forty-foot board. Originally a means of covering up a bland bare wall, the board is now a New York institution and a great "What would you do next?" conversation starter.

Hi there! I came across another post from your blog, and when I saw this post, I knew I had to comment. I actually work right across the street from this chess board, and it's presence is a constant source of dialogue amongst my coworkers.

The best part is non of us has taken the time to google it...we all thought it was simply art. Thanks for the insight!

(and nice blog...it's always nice to come across another nyc blog where you can tell the author loves exploring this amazing city!)
Thanks, and we're happy to hear we helped solve an office mystery!
