The New York Public Library's latest exhibition, The ABC of It, casts a wide historical glance at children's books, seeking to answer the question, why do children's books matter? Part of the fun is wandering around espying books you read as a child, from Dick and Jane to Dr. Seuss to Judy Blume, or checking out the bigger-than-life-size replicas of beloved characters and scenes. After all, if you're attracted to an exhibition such as this, you already know the answer: children's books matter because we would all be so much duller without them.
