Shelley Seccombe on the Lilac

Almost 40 years ago, a raging fire prompted Shelley Seccombe to pick up a camera, lean out of her West Village apartment, and start snapping. She grew fascinated by the New York waterfront as seen through this lens, capturing peeling paint and kids and yogis and tugboats and dogs and cruise ships, decrepitude and revitalization, moments in time along a changing river. In a fascinating meta-twist, her photographs are currently on display on the Lilac, a decomissioned Coast Guard vessel anchored at Pier 25, Hudson River Park. Climb aboard and have a look.
