Alec Soth at Sean Kelly Gallery
We first found photographer Alec Soth at the 2004 Whitney Biennial, and have been following his meteoric rise through the art world ever since. Currently on view at Sean Kelly Gallery in Chelsea are haunting portraits of men with misanthropic stares, who've chosen to move off the grid and deep into nature. It's titled, fittingly, Broken Manual, and also features great piles of books with secret hiding places cut into their pages and a bulletin board with all kinds of weird emphemera about disappearing and transforming into another. He might shoot people interested in taking off, but Soth is certainly sticking around.
