Dr. Strangelove at Film Forum

Stanley Kubrick's 1964 Cold War black comedy, quite probably the best satirical movie ever made, felt as fresh as ever last night at Film Forum. And it looked better than ever, thanks to its 4K restoration. Part of the "This is DCP" series highlighting the ongoing work in digital film restoration, the movie was introduced by Grover Crisp of Sony Pictures, who showed clips from the digitally restored version against the best previous film version. The difference made the audience (literally and loudly) gasp. Watching the DCP version is like seeing the Platonic ideal of the movie, and after a few comparisons you began to doubt your senses and your memory --- could we really have tolerated the scratchy, blurry, jittery, weirdly blue film version for all those years? The series runs through Thursday features one gem after another, so go see what you've been missing.
