Gaia and Imminent Disaster at Ad Hoc Art
Ad Hoc Art, a gallery in Bushwick, refers to itself as a "creative fulcrum," because it specializes in work more often found outside of the gallery scene, on streets, on bodies, underground. We found the work by street artists Gaia and Imminent Disaster very moving, especially the animals with hands and plaintive miens (a specialty of Gaia, apparently). But it was hard not to focus on the huge intricately cut-out arc, draped on muslin along on the back wall, its halves mirrored images of romantic, mythological figures. The best part of each artist's display, however, was the feeling that the location didn't deepen, lessen, or in any way alter the work's integrity --- it merely opened it to an audience who might otherwise have walked on by.
