Tony Hiss at The Half King

Last night at The Half King, we heard Tony Hiss read from In Motion, his new book about "deep travel." A transportation expert, Hiss wants people to experience what he calls "wonder induction" as they move through the world. Each of us has experienced a state in which everything is fascinating and delightful and a spur to more knowledge --- as children, for example, or perhaps in the first flush of love. But then life intervenes, forcing a return to moving without intention or awareness. Hiss argues that we need to train ourselves to experience this state as a form of "inner nutrition," especially during the trying times of the second decade of the twenty-first century. As we do some traveling of our own over the next few weeks, we're going to reflect on Hiss's claims. One thing we do know: no matter where we go, we always return to our favorite city overjoyed to be home.
