Prince of the Himalayas at the Rubin

Last night at the Rubin Museum of Art, we attended a screening of Prince of the Himalayas, a retelling of Hamlet set in pre-Buddhist Tibet. In their introductions, director of programming Tim McHenry and philosopher Simon Critchley lamented Time Out's one-line review ("Tibet or not Tibet") and noted that the movie's plot offers a slight twist on Shakespeare's play. But there were enough changes to make this take more "Hamlite" or "Hamletesque" than an actual retelling. While the narrative tinkering often seemed unnecessary, the shots of the landscape helped us decide to bump Tibet up on our list of places we'd like to go someday, with nary a soliloquy or hesitation.
