Dhaba

For years, noontime Saturdays would find us at an Indian buffet in the Village. We grew so close to the waitstaff, one of them wanted us to visit his family in Chennai. And then things changed, as they are wont to do, and the pappadum lost its crispness, the tandoori chicken lost its spice. It was time to move on.

We floundered, looking for buttery naan and pilau rice worthy of multiple visits. We roamed Lexington Avenue; we took the train to Jackson Heights. Midtown's Chola came close, but who wants to go to Midtown once a week?

And then we discovered that Shiva Natarajan, the Bollywood actor who owns Chola, had opened another restaurant, in a far more appealing location. We dared to dream, then finally gave it a try.

Dhaba serves a super spread every day at lunch, full of North and South Indian specialties, including goat curry and alo gobi, samosa chaat, two types of bread, and --- here's what really sold us --- both rasmalai and halwa for dessert!
