Architects of Air's Daedalum
Architects of Air specialize in inflatable artistic structures. Daedalum, currently on view at Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park, is designed to simultaneously relax and destabilize those who pass through its handstitched caverns of thin, slippery plastic. The work takes its name from Daedalus, father of Icarus and architect of the Minotaur's labyrinth on Crete. After entering via an airlock, you're never quite sure where you are as you travel within the 19 egg-shaped domes. You can lay down in a semi-secluded curve, or watch sunlight filter through colored materials, or close your eyes and listen to the spa-like, piped-in electronica. You might be in a womb, a temple, or an underground warren, far from the city, far from home, far from anything beyond the immediacy of light and air.
